Used Car Review BMW 7 Series 2002 2009

This July 7th, Myk Belmonte reviews a namesake car just for the heck of it.

2002-2009 BMW 7 Series

History
Whenever a car reaches a controversial point, it can mean a make or break status. Even before the car reaches production thanks to some photos that are leaked online, people would even rush to the dealers to buy the last examples of that beautifully styled predecessor. But, styling is just one part of the car.

BMWs E65 designation for the 7 Series had a fair share of drawbacks related to its exterior design and its fussy iDrive interface that some folks bought the old model to spare them from the two problems. It was first developed in 1996 and finalized in 2001, with a launch for the European market in November 2001. Unlike its predecessors, it had specific codes for each version which were: E65 for short wheelbase models, E66 for long wheelbase models, E67 for bulletproof versions, and E68 for the hydrogen prope lled models. There is no M7 version, but it was consoled by the Alpina B7 sold between 2007 and 2008. It was replaced by the F01 7 Series in 2008.

Locally, the E65/E66 7 Series arrived in late 2002 to replace the overdue E38. It was the most expensive Bimmer that you can buy locally, with the top end model costing P15M back in 2008. A myriad of engines and models (which will be discussed further) were made available throughout the years.

Value and Costs
What was once prohibitively can be now yours for the price of a brand new car. Old but less engine displacement models linger in the P850,000-950,000 range while later ones are on the upper scale. There are numerous variants sold so further research is needed to determine the variant right for you. Short wheelbase models are only available between 2002 to 2003, which means majority of them are long wheelbase ones.

For the cheapskates in you, this is definitely not the car to buy if you have limited funds to begin with. Since this is has the iDrive, a trip to a BMW dealer to check things out before you buy is the most prudent option. Testing out each function such as the air suspension, air-conditioning, boot release mechanisms, and other electronic doodads is preferable.

Exterior and Interior
While some criticize the exterior design because of its boldness (which is prevalent in its early years), some praise its bold move to shed BMWs conservative image. Our beloved Chris Bangle gave his artistry when he was designing this, with some bits that had caused the controversy include the two-level rear styling with separate rear fenders and "bustle-back" boot lid that led to the term "Bangle Butt". A 2005 update made this vehicle more subtle and pleasing to the eyes.

Space, space, and more space, this is what the 7 Series in long wheelbase trim obliges you that plus the interior has tons of equipment that will please both dri ver and passenger. The iDrive system controls most of the vehicles gadgets by rotating and clicking a silver button between the front seats and following the menus on the dash, which isnt user friendly to begin with. Apart from that, there are LCD monitors with TV and DVD function so that you can catch your favorite telenovela or flick while stuck in traffic.

Engine
A wide range of engines from the basic 3.0 inline six gasoline to a monstrous V12 engine. In total, there is one inline six, four V8s, one V12, and one diesel so it better pays to choose your engine well. They are willing to be revved but for all day usage, we suggest to stick with the 3.0 in either gas or diesel flavors. The V8s will make sense if you have the money while the V12 is best left behind.

Driving Impressions
Still, the driving joy of a BMW remains despite the hefty body. Steering is accurate and body lean is controlled without com promising comfort. As always, road imperfections do spoil the fun.

Verdict
As they say, beauty lies on the eyes of the beholder. What may be put down for its styling makes up for its balance of power and luxury.

The Good:
  • Well composed
  • Full of gadgets
  • Big inside
The Bad:
  • Clumsy iDrive
  • Styling not for everyone
  • Very very expensive maintenance costs
The Pick: 730d (if you can find one)

Review Volkswagen Golf R

It sits lean and mean, this latest upgrade of the fastest VW Golf ever, with more horses squeezed under the bonnet â€" now its 310hp on the full gallop, writes Brian Byrne.

My review car was 3-door but it is also available in 5-door, though for the life of me I dont know anyone who would want to ride in the back seats when the driver is leaning heavy in this one. Apart from sitting low to the ground on its wide 225 tyres, and the four tailpipes at the back, it is very unadorned. Not even a trace of a roof spoiler that would be considered de rigeur in most hot compact hatches. But you just know it is special.

Volkswagen has a deserved reputation in produ cing hot Golfs, the GTI being most famous over so many of the models generations. Then there were the R32 years, 6-cylinder power for those who wanted more. This R is the natural successor there, though now using a pumped version of the 2.0 TSI petrol that powers the GTI.

Inside, theres not too much pushing the R in visual terms, apart from the letter incorporated in the seats trim. The style of dashboard and instruments is typical to the basic model now in what the company is describing as generation 7.5. Thats not downplaying the interior â€" its cleanly designed, with instruments that do well in combining analogue and digital advantages. Nothing gosh-wow, just whats needed t o do the job properly.

The R has all the tech on board that youd expect from any upper grade of even the standard Golf. Active cruise control, parking assists, lane departure warning, city emergency braking and more. But the core reason for this variant is massive power. And managing it. For that, the R comes with 4WD as standard, and also a Track mode which includes things like launch control for all systems blowing take-offs.

Few of us travel on a track to work, but the Golf R also turns out to be a very easy car to drive in normal motoring environments. You can even use an Eco mode to mollify your green conscience. On that, my review car came with the 7-speed dual clutch auto rather than the 6-speed manual. Which actually cuts the road tax by €200 a year over the manual. Over a 5-year ownership, that and the fuel savings of the auto would easily pay for the extra €1,800.

The boost of adrenalin by tapping the hot pedal smartly and getting close to the 4.6s stated acceleration to 100km/h is fun even on a dull motorway, especially if you want to slip smartly out into the outside lane in busy fast traffic. It also works a treat on the access ramp to the motorway, making it very simple to achieve a safe merge speed.

A solidly confident drive in all conditions, and the suspension working under pressure with none of that old hard sporty feel. I enjoyed the car. Not realistic for most buyers of compact hatches, but for anyone owning a standard Golf, it can tickle the aspirational imagination from time to time.

PRICE: From €45,570, review car €47,370. EQUIPMENT: Everything needed. RATING: 4.7/5.

The Bargains of Christmas Premium and Luxury Sedans

Christmas is just around the corner, and youre asking what car would you want to gift to yourself (if you are good this year) or to your loved ones. Your Ultimate Used Car Guide is here to solve the problem by giving you some recommendations.

So, how are these bargain picks are chosen? Here are some criteria that were followed:
  • A vehicle must be available between 2002-2011
  • Reported problems from owners are minimal, they are based from local forums and several of my reviews
  • Vehicle value must be excellent, since they are good bargains.
  • Must offer a competitive advantage over its rivals and must fit the buyers needs in a category
  • Availability in the second hand market must be widespread
This Friday, well have premium and luxury sedans on the spotlight since the power of depreciation hit them which translates as great bargains. What used to be the playthings of the rich can be your daily driver and intimidate th e brand new car which your office mate has been driving. So, what these executive picks can your money buy?

PREMIUM BEST BARGAIN: 2002-2007 Nissan Cefiro
Thanks to its long list of luxury amenities, a silky smooth V6 engine, and lower resale prices - the Nissan Cefiro is our best bargain pick for the premium sedan category. In fact, this one can outplace and outluxury (if there is a term to start with) European marques, which when it was brand new, can give them a run for their money. The Brougham version has some cheesy wood panels but for everyday usage an Elite variant will do.

Other Bets:
2002-2011 Toyota Camry - The current epitome of the premium sedan market locally, is a great used car bargain. Even the second and third generations can turn heads in the executive powerhouse during meetings, just make sure you wax and wash the car. Choose the 2.4 V (from 2002 o nwards) and youre good to go.

2002-2011 Honda Accord - Another excellent choice in the segment where people whose disposable income are comparable to executives. The good thing is that, this can give the driver the need for speed fantasies thanks to the great driving dynamics but still retaining the same level of features. Just make sure to get the spotlight, we recommend opting for the 2004 to present models since the 2.0 engine in the early models does not have the grunt.

2004-2011 Mazda 6 - Plan to be behind the drivers seat most of the time? This pick is for you. With driving characteristics similar to an athlete, and lower prices; this is a winner. Just make sure you focus your search on late 2005 to later models since they carry the punchy 2.3 engine. Passengers may complain for lack of head room in the rear in 2008 to 2012 models.

2002-2011 Volvo S60 - Our oddball Swedish pick among the Jap anese dominated category. It may not be a great driver focused machine but for those wanting the backseat comfort, this is the one.  The good thing is that, first or second generation model, the presence of Volvos certified pre-owned program to avoid the worries and low purchase price.

LUXURY BEST BARGAIN: 2002-2011 BMW 5 Series
Nothing beats luxury without the ultimate driving machine. And with the numerous units in the used car market, the 5 Series (be it the last units of the E39, E60, or F10) is a great proposition. What is not to love this car? Excellent driving dynamics, powerful engines (especially if you pick the diesel), and cuddles of room. If you can, pick-up a unit that has been certified to avoid future headaches and please, do not take the 2.0 base models since it does not match the personality.

Other bet:
2002-2011 Volvo S80 - Prefer to be at the back? This is the one. With ex cellent features (especially in the safety aspect), great purr from the engines, and also low purchase price. This is a great pick if you do not want the stares.

Car Profiles Chevrolet Trailblazer

CHEVROLET TRAILBLAZER

Chevrolets bet to the increasingly competitive mid-size SUV market and it does succeed. Assets include a comfortable ride and powerful diesels. If theres a Chevrolet that you want to try, this is it.

The Good: Smooth engines
The Bad: Bulky for some

New Micra goes on sale

The fifth generation Nissan Micra has now gone on sale in Ireland at a starting price of €16,650, writes Brian Byrne.

The car is radically different in shape and style and is designed to replace two cars in its segment, the previous Micra and the Note.

It is also aimed at a different potential buyer than the traditional Micra owner, with Nissan targeting a younger profile, partly through offering funky colours and a range of personalisation options.

The new Micra is available with three engines â€" a 1.0 petrol, 0.9 turbocharged petrol, both of them 3-cylinder, and a 1.5 diesel. The Irish distributor estimates that only 5pc of sales will be diesels, while the 1.0 petrol is likely to be the biggest seller.

Four grade options provide a range of specification levels, all of which include radar-actuated automatic braking, LED running lights, and air conditioning.

The new car has an extended wheelbase and is the widest in its segment. Theres a 300L boot capacity.

A first drive article will follow.
