New Car Profiles Compilation

Buying a new car is a daunting task, especially that you get easily confused on a sea of models. Since were not just about used cars, The Ultimate Car Guide features new vehicles in which they are sorted alphabetically plus details spec-by-spec are provided in the profiles themselves.

As much as possible, we would want to keep the information posted accurate as possible, but we do not guarantee that they are 100% correct. Do remember that manufacturers and distributors can change vehicle specifications without further notice, so if you spot any mistake please leave us a comment below and we will fix them as soon as possible. Models without hyperlinks (those in black) means that information about them are being gathered and we will mark them as "new entry" once done.

To view at used car profiles, check the Used Car Profiles Compilation.

Here are some markers:
NEW - A totally new vehicle or a minor update such as a facelift
SOON - Vehicle to be launched soon, with an entry to follow
UPDATE - Ranges from price changes, additional or deletion of equipment, or new variants
DISC - Vehicle to be discontinued (either being replaced by a new model or having no direct replacement), in which these entries would be transferred to the Used Section soon

Vehicle Ratings as follows:
N/R - Given to commercial vans
* - Aint worth it to buy
** - Not trash, but buy one if really needed
*** - Average, not that good but aint bad also
**** - Exceptional, misses some notes
***** - Hurry, buy now!

Used Car Review Toyota Camry 2002 2006

Before leaving this month, Myk Belmonte reviews an executives favorite that can be yours.

2002-2006 Toyota Camry

History
Why do the Americans love the Camry? Well, here are some reasons I can think of: practical for most Americans, dependable, a number of variants to choose from, well mannered, and will last long than you do. Hundreds of thousands of them are driven off dealership floors, with the Camry grabbing the best selling car (trucks are not mixed here) title in 1997, dislodging the Ford Taurus (and never reclaimed by an American sedan).

First launched in September 2001, the XV30 Camry grew in size than the pizza crust dimensions of the XV20 (1996-2001). No station wagon version here, but the platform where the Camry was based paved way for the Highlander crossover and Sienna minivan. If the previous model looked flat, it gained more height and wheelbase that resulted to a tall structure. This generation of Camr y was marketed in different parts (except mainland Europe, with the vehicle being sold in UK for a short time) of the world by adjusting to local preferences.

June 2002 saw the introduction of the Camry in the Philippines and this generation had executives jump for joy. Why did I say this? People didnt warm up to the anonymous looking previous gen, but this one looked stately and evokes their image without being kidnapped. Sales of the XV30 Camry ceased with the introduction of the XV40 Camry in the latter part of 2006. Variants include the following: E (base) and G (upgraded) for the 2.0, available until 2004; the E and V for the 2.4 and the V is reserved for the 3.0.

Value and Costs
With just resale prices below P500,000, the Camry is a steal for those who want more luxury for less. Hunt for a 3.0 V6 and youll enjoy paradise in no time. Dont forget the funds for parts and fuel, though.

Toyotas are definitely reliable, which is wh y they are sought out in the market and the Camry is one of them. Maintaining one is definitely more than the Corolla Altis, due to the larger engine and myriad of power features. Find something well taken care of, and youll enjoy each miles of it.

Exterior and Interior
Thanks to Hiroyuki Metsugi, the Camry looks tall but without being scary. Smooth and sleek, it hides its bulkiness well with the help of the large headlights good for quad beam and a high shoulder line. The rear is somewhat detached from the rest of the body but still an improvement nevertheless.

It was definitely worth the money inside the Camry. Except for the E, all models do have a leather clad interior of high quality. Controls are within reach of the driver but the dashboard is where people against illegal logging would be angry for. Space, is of course, class leading and a huge leap from the flat predecessor.

Engine
Two four bangers and a V 6 found home under the Camrys hood throughout the years. Available from 2002 until 2004, the 1AZ-FE 1,998cc which is good for 149hp at 5,600rpm and 192Nm at 4,000rpm is the base engine until it was chucked in 2004. Next in line is the 2AZ-FE 2,362cc that carries 157hp at 5,600rpm and 220Nm at 3,800-4,200rpm and relegated to the base model role in late 2004. The icing of the Camry cake is the 1MZ-FE 2,994cc V6 which possess 212hp at 5,800rpm and 298Nm at 4,400rpm. So how do these engines play? For the 2.0, we wouldnt bother much although it is decent enough inside the city, the engine might struggle to carry the weight. Our pick is the 2.4 which has the balance of power and economy, and since this is the common engine, finding one isnt trouble. Despite having a monster of an engine, the 3.0 V6 is whisper quiet and smooth.

Driving Impressions
If the previous Camry would treat passengers like they are in a boat, that malady was vanished in the XV30 Camry w hich youll love riding in more. The suspension vindicates all road bumps and gives the Camry a well controlled body. Handling is still on the safe side, which is not an enthusiasts dream.

Verdict
Toyota did it right with this model which gained the approval of the moneyed people. Back in October 24, 2002, the Nissan Cefiro is still the top choice, the Toyota Camry attracts curious buyers (from the anonymous replacement), and the Honda Accord and Mitsubishi Galant are heading towards the retirement home. Used Car Review Honda HR V 2000 2003

For the very first day of July, Myk Belmonte features a rather unpopular SUV to see it more.

2000-2003 Honda HR-V

History
First conceived as the Wildful and Joyfull JW-J concept car displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1997, the HR-V was placed in production a year later after its popularity. Based on the smaller Honda Logo while having lower emissions and unique styling, it can be (which is debatable) considered as one of the first crossovers out there.

The HR-V abbreviation stands for Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle, which Honda billed it so. Apart from Japan and some Pacific countries, it was also sold in Europe without a diesel engine. You may buy one in either a three or five door configuration until its 2006 discontinuation, with no direct successor.

While the CR-V was an immense hit in the Philippines back then, the HR-V was rather a novelty vehicle that sold less. First made available in the millenniu m year, the HR-V had fairly a limited market no thanks to a steep price tag due to its made in Japan status. Having no choice and after a limited run, Honda dropped this one in 2003.

Value and Costs
For just between P250,000-P370,000, the HR-V can be yours especially that you will also encounter first and some second generation CR-Vs in the classified block. If you really want one, a local unit is the way to go since there have been imported units from Japan which are converted and can be money pits if not properly maintained.

Since this vehicle isnt a best seller from the start, parts can be hard to come by quickly. With local HR-Vs having 4WD, checking out the drivetrain rigorously is the way. But then, this is a Honda which is reliable plus take care of this and youll have years of worry free driving.

Exterior and Interior
Its exterior styling can elicit good or bad reactions, especially the boxy shape isnt fo r everyone and has its own purpose for that. Let me tell you one secret of this car: it boasts one of the best occupant and pedestrian protection ratings in an accident. The bumpers were raised high for aerodynamic reasons, the entire front end was designed to be less fatal for the pedestrian which means the hood absorbs the impact. Nice effort.

Sitting in the drivers seat is a convenience, especially the driving position is upright plus controls are logically placed and easy to reach. On the other hand, the rear seats arent that comfortable for those who are beyond the average height but if you do not need to haul people all the time, the back seats can be stowed for maximum storage. Unlike other Hondas, the interior design wouldnt win any awards especially it looks plain to begin with.

Engine
Powering this crossover is a D16W1 1,590cc carrying 105hp at 6,200rpm and 138Nm at 3,400rpm that does not have any VTEC magic. Despite lacking that te chnology, it can accelerate with ease plus it has lower emissions that can outpace modern competitors. In other countries, a variant with VTEC is made available.

Driving Impressions
Despite lacking power, it is fun to drive which proves its sports name in the SUV plus it has a predictable steering. The suspension is well footed despite its tall height, the latter an advantage towards everyday driving.

Verdict
There are reasons for you to get and not to get the HR-V. If you want something unique while conquering the everyday rigors of work, this is for you. If you need something larger and powerful, consider other options.

The Good
  • Sporty than utility
  • Reliable
  • Raised height than other crossovers
The Bad:
  • Engine power can be lacking for some
  • No good off-road
  • Limited availability in the market
The Pick: An y maintained local unit

THE SPECS

Used Car Review Volkswagen Touareg 2004 2006

Before leaving October, Myk Belmonte investigates this SUV if its worth the buy.

2004-2006 Volkswagen Touareg

History
Volkswagens are used to be popular in the game of sedans (Jetta, Passat), hatchbacks (Beetle, Golf), and somewhat MPVs and vans (Sharan, Caravelle). With the popularity of sport utility vehicles during the early 2000s, Volkswagen has no choice but to enter since all the profits are in that category.

Bet you didnt know that the Touareg is developed together with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, which shares the same platform but differs in equipment, styling, and technical items. Since the three vehicles are designed with off-roading and sports car handling in mind, they were technically the first SUV offerings of the three German brands. The 7L Touareg was first offered in 2002 and produced until 2010.

Auto Prominence, Volkswagens local distributor before, shipped in this SUV in April 200 4 with the V6 guise arriving first and the V8 being available in October. In terms of price, it competed against its European stalwarts, as well with some high end Japanese and American SUVs. The higher engine was dropped in July 2005 and the vehicle sometime in 2006, with the Touareg nameplate resurfacing seven years later as a second generation model.

Value and Costs
In other countries, this vehicle is marketed as a high end vehicle as opposed to other Volkswagens being mass market ones and this approach is also done here before. Price started at P4.2M for the V6 (an additional P200,000 for units with an air suspension) and the V8 costing P5M, which was rather expensive for something that is viewed as a peoples car. Because of this, only a few Touaregs of this generation were sold which meant less supply in the used car market. Another source to look out are second hand imports but they arent that popular, too.

Since this is a vehicle which didnt sell well, expect limited availability of parts (although the new distributor of Volkswagen may accept servicing of old units) against BMW and Mercedes Benz. Do not expect levels of diesel SUV maintenance, especially when going with the monstrous V8.

Exterior and Interior
Unlike the Cayenne which has a love it or hate it design, the Touareg sports a more simpler design which is controversial free than the more luxurious cousin. Although at some angles it may look bulky, it manages to hold itself.

Its large dimension outside translates to a roomy cabin for five in comfort (no third row option available, thats relegated to the Q7 whose extended wheelbase is meant for that) despite sporting a less roomy cabin than other rivals. Inside, a high quality interior with wood panels treats the occupants with the 4WD knob located below the transmission knob.

Engine
A 3.2 V6 (which came standard among 2002-2004 Touaregs) having 217hp and a 306hp 4.2 V8 were the engine options back in the day. The V6 is refined and decent enough for everyone while the V8 gains more power. We recommend going with the lesser one unless you prefer more expenses (which we assume so).

Driving Impressions
Even though it may look large outside, this SUV has driving manners which are civilized on the cemented road and does amazingly well when the rough gets going. Driving this one on-road will reward you a smooth and comfortable drive especially it was tuned that way, as opposed to the Cayennes sporty handling.

Verdict
With Volkswagen producing an SUV is like a popular celebrity vying for a position in the elections and winning, but the German brand was successful in placing itself in the SUV race. The Touareg may be rare but it is one bargain if you are willing to compromise yourself with several issues.

The Good:

  • Smooth on the road
  • Great off-road
  • Comfortable to be in
The Bad:
  • Heavy
  • Somewhat less space at the back
  • Expensive maintenance costs
The Pick: 3.2 V6

THE SPECS
Engines: 3.2 V6 and 4.2 V8
Power: 217hp (V6), 306hp (V8)
Torque: Data Not Avaulable
Fuel Consumption: 4-7km/L (city), 7-10km/L (highway) (*estimated and varies)

Lots of best in class in new C3 Aircross

Because the new C3 Aircross was developed independently rather than being based on the C3 hatchback in its size category, its maker is confident to call it the most spacious and modular small MPV, writes Brian Byrne.

Speaking at the Irish launch of the car yesterday, Managing Director of Citroen Ireland Chris Graham said the designers had carte blanche to make it stand out in a really busy segment.

He noted a number of best in class features, including headroom and leg- and knee-room, and said the rear seat passengers have just as comfortable a situation as those in front.

The 520L of luggage space with all seats in use is a greater than SUVs in the next segment up, he said.

The car is available in three grades â€" Touch, Feel and Flair. The entry level version is fully featured with a range of specification not matched by any competitor, according to a comparison chart. In the Feel grade, expected to be 73pc of sales, the C3 Aircross is the most competitive both in price and level of standard features.

There are two petrol engine options, an 82hp and a 110hp turbo, as well as a 100hp diesel. A full automatic version of the higher-powered petrol is also on offer. The distributors expect that 72pc of sales will be petrol.

Pictured at the launch are Louise Murphy, Marketing Dirtector Citroen Ireland; Chris Graham, Managing Director Citroen Ireland; and Ed Kelleher, Product Manager Citroen Ireland.

Volkswagen calendar for Pieta House

A calendar for 2018 produced by Volkswagen Ireland will raise funds for Pieta House, writes Brian Byrne.

The photographs are selected from 5,000 entries in a competition on Instagram run over two months in the summer.

Each calendar will cost €10 and all proceeds go directly to Pieta House.

The images include a wedding in a vintage VW camper to scenes from the streets of Dublin, through an adventure in the mountains and all the way to a sunset in Kinsale.

The winners of the competition visited the Volkswagen factory during the summer, as well as receiving a number of technology prizes.

Car Profiles Toyota Vios

TOYOTA VIOS

Shedding its taxicab image, this Vios is still the one you know since yesterday. One major highlight is the migration of gauges to the driver side, where it should be. While faux stitches are a classy touch, hard plastics are still present, but who cares? Now with an upgraded engine and an optional CVT.

The Good: Cheap to buy and own
The Bad: Cheap feeling interior plastics

Used Car Review Chevrolet Venture 2001 2007

Want a cheap van for the weekend family escapade? Myk Belmonte has one pick that you might love.

2001-2007 Chevrolet Venture

History
Bet you didnt know that Buick is doing well in China than in the States. They started with a Chinese version of the Century and Regal (the latter is known in the Philippines as the Chevrolet Lumina) and success started there. By just adjusting US (or Australian) models to Chinese preferences, you get high sales since you have listened to your market.

The Buick GL8 sold in China is the Pontiac Montana in the other side of the globe. First available to Chinese families in 1999 in both regular and extended versions, the Buick found success in the east rather than the west. Still sold as new under the name GL8 Business Edition despite a new generation model launched in 2010.

It was in 2001 when GM Automobiles Pilipinas sold the GL8 under the Che vrolet Venture badge. This rivaled the Hyundai Starex, newbie Kia Carnival, and paved way for other competitors from Nissan, Toyota, and Chrysler. The early models can seat 10 people due to taxation reasons while 2005 and later ones have capacity of seven bodies. Imports ceased in 2007 due to some unknown reason, and no direct replacement from Chevrolet was seen. Variants included a base model (it was named as the CT in 2005), LT (added in 2003), and the more plusher LT Premium (added in 2005).

Value and Costs
Your weekend car is now affordable, with prices in the range of P160,000-P310,000. With Chevrolets a victim of low resale values, this is one appealing package. That is, if you continue to read the preceding paragraphs.

Since this vehicle is discontinued, parts procurement can be limited to the casa or some American specialist shops. Problems which plagued Ventures are overheating, suspension, noise from the air conditio ning, and radiator issues. Fuel consumption is more scary than a Filipino Horror Movie, so if you want this van, am I scarring you or making up your mind? If you desire this van, head for a later model since earlier ones can be a hit or miss.

Exterior and Interior
Let us not deal with the exterior design more since the main purpose is to haul people, not to steal glances. LT and higher models are distinguished by their two tone color and their roof rails. All Ventures come with dual sliding doors, making access easy.

It is what inside that counts, since youll spend more time inside. For 10 seater models, there are three seat belts in the front (the driver gets a separate chair with adjust) and the third rows and four for the second row occupants. Life has been simplified for 2005 and later units with a 2-2-3 seating layout. With all seats up, the Venture can even accommodate a little at the back, while the third row can be adjusted forward. Legroom and headroom is definitely excellent, even with the seats all up. It uses a stick type shifter which gives more room for the legs while the dash is a button affair from the foglamps to the audio system, time is required to memorize one of them.

Engine
If the USDM Venture uses a 3.4 LA1 V6, the PHDM Venture has a LW9 3,086cc V6 gasoline good for 171hp at 5,200rpm and 345Nm at 4,400rpm. Performance in high speeds has an initial delay but when it kicks in, it is one blast of a drive. Even at highway speeds, the vehicle feels stable.

Driving Impressions
Thankfully, it drives like a car since weaving in traffic is a breeze and parking is cake. Visibility can be a problem especially when the vehicle is full. Overall, youll love this vehicle especially if you are tired driving an AUV or any truck based vehicle.

Verdict
Decid ing to get a Venture is something debatable. You are rewarded with a comfortable ride and more space for people but downsides are in the financial aspect. Ask yourself if you are better with a different van or with a Chevrolet.

The Good:
  • Cushy ride
  • Family friendly
  • Stable at high speeds
The Bad:
  • Coarse and fuel thirsty engine
  • Tight seating with 10 seater version
  • Maintaining can be expensive
The Pick: LT

Review Volvo XC60

A caveat. This review is of a car thats on runout, and will be superseded at the end of the year by a new version, writes Brian Byrne. But that doesnt mean it isnt worth investing in.

The Volvo XC60 has been a workhorse for the Swedish brand since it was first launched in 2008 as part of the S60 range of cars which had revitalised Volvo. It rapidly became Volvos best selling car globally.

Because this was a time when Volvo and Land Rover were both owned by Ford, the technology used by the car is similar to that of the original Freelander. And there was never anything wrong with that.

The review car is based on a refresh that took place in 2014, a nd which got a new engine in 2016.

Although classified as a compact crossover SUV, the style of the XC60 always made it seem a larger car than its direct competition, which would include Fords Kuga, Toyotas RAV 4, Audis Q5 and similar. Theres a typical Volvo handsomeness about it, and the brands products are always distinctive, especially from the rear where the XC60s version of the full-height rear lights housings are unmistakable. The style is also evolutionary, and the new generation on the way shows that too.

Volvo has been solidly targeting the premium space for a long time, and is fitted out to compete against particularly the Audi range, so it isnt any surprise that comfort and refinement are major themes to help it gain traction there. There is a palpable sense of solidity when you get in and pull the door closed. The interior style and fittings are restrained but are clearly quality. Maybe because of where the car is in its life cycle, the screen that manages infotainment and the rear view camera seems a bit small compared to what has been coming out in more recent cars. Its one change that customers of the new one will find.

The XC60 is a roomy car, and its design means that theres really good headroom in the rear as well as for those up front. And lots of boot space â€" this is one for the long tour with a group of family or friends.

The review car was the Classic version, with R-Design, which latter means some special exterior trim and, more important, a somewhat firmer suspension setting that quite suits the vehicle.

The D4 2.0 turbodiesel first appeared in 2014, and last year got a boost in power to 190hp. The maximum pulling power characteristic promises very smooth operation with a wide band from 1740-3250rpm. That means the car will work without stress in any kind of driving conditions, motorway or mountain passes. My version had the 8-speed automatic transmission, and that worked qu ite seamlessly with the torquey engine.

The overall drive was very good, and I was happy that it had the R-Design pack, as the firmer suspension seemed just right for my style of driving.

The XC60 runout model is currently priced from €39,995 with a free Style Pack worth €2,000. The Style pack includes Front & Rear Park Assist, Rear Parking Camera, Active TFT Crystal Drivers Information Display, and Interior Lighting enhancement.

The new XC60 pricing starts at €53,950. Order books are now open and first customer cars will be arriving in October.

Used Car Review Dodge Durango 2000 2004

Myk Belmonte explores this rather unnoticed 4x4 in the market.

2000-2004 Dodge Durango

History
Before the Philippine market got the pick-up truck based SUV fever just 10 years ago, the Yanks had theirs in the 70s to the 90s. Dodge was first in this trend with the Ramcharger based on the D Series/Ram pick-up trucks made available in 1974, Chevrolets S-10 Blazer was based on its namesake S-10 pick-up truck first launched in 1983, and Fords Bronco introduced in 1984 whose underpinnings were derived from the Ranger. The 90s era Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango are based from the Ranger and Dakota trucks respectively. The shift to crossovers plus the diminishing market for compact pick-up trucks had ended an era of these species in the US, except for the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe that are based on the Silverado.

Preceding the Ramcharger which was discontinued in 1993, the first generation Durango was first sold in 1998 only available in 4WD, with a 2WD option and a V6 engine followed suit the following year. Unlike the Blazer and Explorer, it did offer an optional third row seat which was an advantage especially larger SUVs like the Suburban and Expedition had them. While it was a popular pick, the end of its shelf life had refined SUVs entering to the scene, which necessitated a redesign for 2003.

The guys at Norkis Automotive Resources Corporation, who ditched Daewoo distribution in the early 2000s, launched the Durango in 2000. It was first available in 4WD with a 2WD version made available in October 2001. While the world has the second generation model available, Norkis sold them until 2004 with the following model being distributed by CATS Motors the following year.

Value and Costs
American SUVs arent exactly known for their residual values, so expect to pick up a second hand Durango between P270,000-P450,000.

While parts availabili ty may be limited due to the lack of support by Norkis, independent shops specializing Chryslers and American vehicles as a whole had spouted so be friends with them. Since this era of Chrysler vehicles arent exactly known for their reliability, have a mechanic inspect the various parts so youll have a worry free driving.

Exterior and Interior
Butch and brash, these are the words to describe the Durangos exterior. Although it may possess smaller dimensions as against the Expedition, it has imposing looks that will scare off other motorists. Park this one side by side with a 1997-2003 Dakota and youll notice the similarities, which is because they share the same underpinnings.

Philippine market Durangos can accommodate 8 people, all front facing. The driver and the front passenger can move their legs, thanks to the automatic gear stick being situated behind the steering wheel. For those who wouldnt want to share seats upfront, the center conso le composed of two cupholders and some storage bins are present. While the gauges are big, radio and climate controls would require time to master as they are small.

Engine
In the US, there is an option for a sole V6 and two V8s, depending on the year model. In the local context, we do get the 4.7 V8 from the PowerTech engine family carrying 235hp at 4,800rpm and 379Nm at 3,200rpm which replaced the 5.2 Magnum V8 in the home market. Dont let the small displacement turn you off, it is more efficient than the engine it replaced plus it offers gobs of power from a wide range of power band.

Driving Impressions
Despite weighing 2,200kg and having a small V8 engine, the Durango can surpass the distance by providing safe steering but handling isnt a strength. Ride quality wouldnt be tops especially one must consider its truck based roots.

Verdict
If you prefer your SUV American and like your style bru te, then a used Durango would suit your preference. However, do remember that there are shortcomings that you must accept during your ownership experience.
The Good:
  • Spacious cabin
  • Power
  • Rugged looks
The Bad:
  • Thirsty for fuel
  • Poor ride quality
  • Handling isnt the best
The Pick: 4.7 V8

Not as diverse as Japans or Chinas, the Korean (we mean South Korea) car market is one of the largest. With some five or six homegrown brands accounting most of their market, most of their vehicles are sold worldwide. However, there are some Korean branded vehicles that are not sold in South Korea for certain reasons.

In this article, we shall discover Korean branded vehicles sold in the outside their country but not marketed in their home country. This covers brands such as Hyundai (and their Genesis sub-brand), Kia, Ssangyong, GM Korea, and Renault Samsung if such vehicles are covered.

New Mazda CX 5 in June

The Mazda CX-5 has been a pretty key car for the brand in many markets since it was first launched, and in Ireland it is consistently the third biggest seller and responsible for a fifth of all Mazda registrations, writes Brian Byrne.

Which is why dealers are getting ready to have the new generation of the car on sale from 1 June, at a starting price of €28,995 on the road for the Executive 2.0 petrol. Available with 2.0 petrol of 165hp and 2.2 diesels of 150/175hp, it will also offer full automatic transmissions and an AWD version.

A 9-model lineup will offer three grades. There have been significant changes. The style is less bullnose, with a shift to a more defined version of the grille, sleeker lights, an d a generally smoother look.

The interior materials are a step up from before, and the overall dashboard design is moved on from the style which pertained in the outgoing car, first launched in 2012.

There are changes under the skin. The platform has been refined and strengthened. The noise, vibration and harshness elements have been further toned down, especially the noise part.

Safety features include a standard automatic emergency braking system â€" smart city brake support â€" that fully stops the vehicle when the cars sensors note an imminent crash.

Theres an active cruise control, and also new LED lights which fully adapt to prevailing light and driving conditions. A head-up display is also availa ble at upper levels.

New seats include an option of heated rear seats, and theres also an offer of a powered tailgate, which can be operated by a kick across the space underneath the rear.

Mazda Ireland is expecting to sell some 700 units in the first full year of the new model. There are about 2,500 owners of the current car in Ireland.
